From the ultra-rare B-1A bomber to air and space fighters, Denver's Wings Over the Rockies Museum is a fascinating place. Here's a look.

I'm under the B-1 Lancer. This is one of my favorite planes and despite visiting aviation museums around the world, I have never seen one in person. Not only that, it's a B-1A - which is even rarer. Capable of Mach 2.2, here it is in full display.
It's true that I came to the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver to see this one ship, but there is so much more to this museum. There is a B-52 on a plinth in front that appears to be flying. Next to the B-1 is the F-111, which itself is next to the F-14: a trio of supersonic swing-wings.
The idea behind the B-1 was to combine the payload of the B-52 and the speed of the B-58 into one aircraft so that the US Air Force could retire both. In the final version, it ended up being slower than the second one, and the first one survives.
The version in the museum is the B-1A, one of four prototypes that first flew in the 1970s. Personally, I didn't quite understand how

This. Almost 150 feet long, almost as long as a B-52 or 767-200. It has three huge bomb bays and of course the iconic moving wings.
The B-1A was not particularly successful. It was over budget and the role it was designed for was quickly filled by faster and cheaper cruise missiles. There was a new MiG-25 at the time, which theoretically caught up with the B-1, so the speed of the bomber was irrelevant (it had a longer range at lower speeds). In 1977, President Jimmy Carter canceled the program.
Manufacturer Rockwell was undeterred and continued testing. In 1982, the Reagan administration ordered a slightly different version of the B-1. The modified B-1B had a lower overall top speed (Mach 1.25) but a higher subsonic top speed. It was converted into a low-altitude, high-speed bomber. This mission was successful: it is one of three bombers in use by the Air Force today. The rest are the more than 70-year-old B-52 and B-2 Spirit stealth bombers that began life in the Advanced Technology Bomber project that Carter started. Although unknown at the time, the B-2 may have been one of the reasons he canceled the original B-1 program.
Most B-1Bs are still flying. Only one other B-1A survives at the Strategic Air Command Museum in Ashland, Nebraska.
Denver Museum Depicts History
The B-1A is the crown jewel of Wings Over the Rockies, but it's not the only jewel. There's also the F-111 and F-14, both swing-wing beauties.
The front B-52B that's sure to turn heads is the RB version, which can carry a 300-pound scout box and eight additional crew members.
Then there are some Century Series fighters who are in fantastic form. Little more than a small wing engine, the F-104 Starfighter is always beautiful. It sits alongside the F-102 Delta Dart and the F-100. There are not many military propeller aircraft - the most notable are the Beechcraft UC-45 Expeditor and the Douglas B-18 Bolo.
Wings Over the Rockies is impressive not only for the incredibly rare B-1A, but also for the pristine condition of all the craft. Some of the examples in the museum are in the best condition of any museum I've been to
